About Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia’s second-largest city and is regularly ranked among the world’s most liveable cities. It is known for its laneways, coffee and food culture, galleries, live music, gardens, and major sporting events. The city is also a hub for research and education, home to several leading universities, including RMIT University, the host of ACML 2026.

The Capital

Melbourne is the capital of the state of Victoria. The national capital of Australia is Canberra.

Time Zone

In December, Melbourne observes Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), UTC/GMT +11 hours.

Weather

December is early summer in Melbourne. Daytime temperatures are typically in the low-to-mid 20s °C, and nights are cooler, around 13–15 °C. The weather can change quickly, and hot days above 30 °C are possible. Bring layers, a light jacket and an umbrella. For the latest forecast, see the Bureau of Meteorology.

Sun protection: UV levels in Australia are very high in summer, even on cloudy days. Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses when outdoors.

Currency

The local currency is the Australian Dollar (AUD). Credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and contactless payment (including mobile wallets) is very common. Some businesses add a small surcharge for card payments. Currency exchange is available at the airport and at banks, and ATMs are widely available.

Tipping

Tipping is not expected in Australia, as service staff are paid a minimum wage. Leaving around 10% at restaurants for good service is appreciated but entirely optional.

Getting Around

Melbourne’s trams, trains and buses use the myki card, which can be bought and topped up at stations, 7-Eleven stores and the airport. Trams within the city centre are free in the Free Tram Zone. Note that the conference venue is just outside the zone; see the Venue page for the nearest free stop. For journey planning and fares, see Public Transport Victoria.

Medication

Bring enough of any personal medication for your stay, in its original packaging, together with a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor. Some medicines are restricted in Australia and must be declared on arrival.

SIM Cards and Wi-Fi

Prepaid SIM and eSIM plans from major providers such as Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are available at Melbourne Airport, in convenience stores and in the city. You will need your passport to activate a SIM card.

Electricity

Australia uses Type I power sockets (two flat pins in a V shape, with or without a vertical earth pin). The standard voltage is 230 V at a frequency of 50 Hz. Most visitors will need a plug adapter, and devices that do not support 230 V will also need a voltage converter.

Drinking Water

Tap water in Melbourne is safe to drink and is among the best-quality tap water in the world.

Emergency Numbers

In an emergency, call 000 for police, fire or ambulance. From a mobile phone, you can also dial 112.
